Math Homework for 5th and 6th graders:
This is a reminder that students are still required to get in their hour of Mobymax math each week. They also need to complete their assigned time of 45 minutes or 60 minutes (depending on the student) completed in I-Ready math and they must complete at least one lesson in I-Ready each week.
You can pre-order you Forbush 2017-2018 Yearbook online now through March 1st. The cost is $23.

Mrs. Marcincavage's Math Classes
I love teaching math!!!
I know some of 5th and 6th grade math can be challenging for both the students and the parents but it will make you better mathematical thinkers!!! It is normal for a student not to be able to answer every problem on every assignment. The process of interpreting, understanding, and trying different strategies is valuable in the attainment of mathematical power. Remember, no student is expected to know the answer to every problem. (If they already knew the answers, then I wouldn't be teaching them anything!) Thank you for accompanying you child on their mathematical adventure this year! The rewards will last a lifetime!
Please check under your child's grade tab (5th or 6th grade) for their math assignments. We will work on them at school and your child should work on them at home when possible too. They only way to learn math is to do math so the more they practice they better they will get, just like in sports or arts.
This website is a work in progress so check back often for updates and changes! I will add lots of videos and other links to help students and parents with our math lessons so be sure to check out my links pages for some great resources!
Our school has been given the opportunity to pilot a new online reading and math program this year called i-Ready. This program is designed to tutor your child individually on their specific needs in both reading and math. It is fully aligned with the NC Common Core Curriculum that we are teaching in NC schools. We have given all students a diagnostic placement test in both reading and math at school this past week and the program has assigned each student lessons based on their individual needs according to their diagnostic tests in each subject. This program has proven highly effective with students who spend at least 45 minutes per week working on their math skills and their reading skills (total of at least 1 1/2 hours per week). It is our goal for the students to use i-Ready here at school during the week to get their weekly required time of 45 minutes per subject. We will use it during our Encore and Enrichment periods at school. As teachers, we will still teach all the 5th and 6th grade curriculum standards during regular class periods. Since we are using i_Ready during out I/E periods, some students may not get their entire 1 1/2 hours of time in during the school day if they go see Mrs. West or Mrs. Lyon during the day or are working with a teacher in a small group. If this is the case, please make sure your child uses the i-Ready program at home too during the week to maximize their growth potential in both subjects. This program is designed for all grades levels so it can help to bring up students who may be working below grade level in some areas as well as challenge the students working above grade level in other areas. In addition, those students currently working below grade level may need more time in addition to the required 45 minutes per subject per week, in order to grow to grade level. Please have your child as spend as much extra extra time at home as possible working on the subject/subjects they are currently below grade level in so they can really grow and achieve grade level proficiency. This program is like a free, personal tutor for your child that will work on their individual needs! The students will not need your help. Please let them work independently so the program can continue to assign lessons based on your child's needs. We will monitor students progress through-out the year and inform parents of students placements and growth. With all our class instruction, small group instruction, and the addition of this tutoring program this year, we are hoping to have all our students working on or above grade level by the end of the year! The more you student uses this program, the more growth we will be able to see at the end of the year! We will share your child's placement and progress at parent conferences.
Since this program reads aloud to your child, each student needs a pair of earbuds or headphones at school each day! Please make sure your child has a pair of earbuds to leave here at school so they don't forget them at home. They need a pair for at home and a pair to leave at school. These were on the school supply list you received the summer or the beginning of the school year. You can purchase these cheaply at Dollar General.

MobyMax Online Math:
Students have access to an wonderful online math program called Mobymax and this program is designed to help each child on their individual math level. The program will continue to modify each child's assignments based on how the student performs on each lesson. Students may be working on some 4th grade things that they still have trouble with but they may also be working on some 6th grade math if they are ready for that skill. This program covers from kindergarten until high school so your child should be challenged on their individual grade level! This is great way for students to make lots of growth in math! I expect the students to do at least one hour of Mobymax math for homework during the week. That hour does not include anytime they use it at school during their I/E sessions because we will also use it here at school. I can see exactly when each student logs in, how many problems they do, how long it takes them on each problem, what types on problems they are working on and the progress they are making in all areas. I can assign certain lessons to the whole class, small groups and then their will also be individualized lessons for each student.
Login steps for Students:
1. Please go to www.mobymax.com/signin 2. Enter School Code: nc774 Students have their user name and passwords in their red folders.
YOUR CHILD IS REQUIRED TO SPEND AT LEAST 1 HOUR A WEEK ON MOBYMAX FOR THEIR MATH HOMEWORK !!! This is the only math homework I am assigning this year. They can do 10 minutes each night, or 2 nights of 30 minutes each, or however works best for your family's schedule. Your child should be able to do this math individually because this program will give them direct instruction when they miss a problem.

Students use this to take test and see their grades.
(Parents can use this to see their student's grades too.)
Great Resources for Parents (who have forgotten how to do math)!!!
There is an excellent book I use called "Help Your Kids With Math" A Unique Step-Step Visual Guide published by DK. You can look online for it at www.dk.com and order it. It is $19.95 but worth every penny because it will help with math from now all the way through Statistics and Geometry and Trigonometry and Pythagora's Theorem (all advanced maths in high school that your student will have to take to graduate). The math is explained on simple terms and pictures that parents who have not done math in 20 years can understand. Get you one and your kids will be amazed with how much "you know" about math.
There is also another excellent book I use called, "The Complete Middle School Study Guide - Everything You need to Ace Math in One Big Fat Notebook" published by Workman Publishing. You can look for it online at www.workman.com . It will help your kids (you) all the way through high school with math. This boo is also available for Science, English, World History and American History too.
